Deadly heat

I lost two hens today to the heat - a White Rock & my Ameraucana, Jane.  It has been over 100 for who knows how many day but today was the hottest so far.  It is nearly 9:00 pm and it is 99 outside.  I should have checked on them this afternoon.  I should have let them free range to find some cooler spots.  I should have given them cooler water.  I should have...  I know it is inevitable, they are farm animals.  This is part of the life we have chosen.  I have learned an important lesson today - during extreme temperatures, I need to pay closer attention.  Today, I just wish it hadn't been one of my green egg girls.

  1. I'm sorry for your loss Kim. We lost our Wellsummer Sally to the heat back in June. She didn't do well with the onset of the summer. I can verify that if you didn't watch their demise its better. Then our Amerucana ended up being a Roo...so no green eggs for us either. Even though you've chosen farm life its hard to get attached to something and then lose it. Hugs!

  2. Thanks, Sarah. I'm sorry you lost one too and about your roo. Maybe we should get more Ameraucana chicks.

  3. Oh, Kim, I am so sorry to hear this. I know you are grieving for them. They are so much more than farm animals. Try not to beat yourself up for what you "should" have done. You are learning and that is the best you can do. I bet it will never happen again. Hugs to you.

  4. Oh no Kim. :( I know that's part of it all too, but I am dreading it.

  5. Oh, Kim, I'm sorry. We're having lots of heat here, too, although not as bad as last year's. They are such hard lessons, but we do learn. Watering the yard for them sounds like a great idea. I just make sure mine have adequate water, shut the west-facing window, and pray they're all hanging in there when I get home in the evenings from work to let them free range for a few hours.

So what do you think of that?
