Horse parenthood

Bringing our horses home has made us feel as if we just brought home our first born child.  You are so excited to get them there. Then when you do you think, "I can't believe they let us have him.  We don't know what we are doing!"  You can read books, watch videos, and have training somewhere else but when it comes to having them on your own, it's different.  I think most people have always had horses or they had them growing up and then go back to it.  We, on the other hand, have started our journey with horses midlife.  It's going to be an adjustment for all of us, horses included.

Both horses need love, attention, & leadership which we are ready to give.  Once they settle into their new surroundings, we will start working with them and riding.  Until then we are watching them closely and going out to pet them at least once an hour.  The other night we were up in our pajamas with a flashlight checking on them at 4 in the morning to make sure they were ok because they were lying down and we were afraid they had colic!  Doesn't that sound like new parenthood only with horses?

  2. Thanks, Susan. I appreciate your encouragement. I have had doubts more than a few times this weekend. I did ride my own horse in my own arena tonight. It was short but very nice. Still love the dishcloths, by the way!

  3. Congratulations! Sounds like you are great parents already. My parents had horses before I was born - fifteen. They had never had horses before nor had anyone in their families. The stories from that time period in their lives are priceless, and I'm so sorry I missed it. They said it was also a LOT of hard work, so good luck!

  4. 15! No wonder it was hard work! We will stick with 3, well, maybe 4 or 5. It would be fun to have one for each of us.

  5. I feel this same way about our new puppy! We thought it might be a good thing to experience before we had kids, and I am overwhelmed already! Although I can't even imagine the responsibility of a horse, good luck!

  6. Holly, we have been there. We started with our first dog before we were married! I hate to tell you this, but animal parenthood doesn't even come close to the real thing. Each challenge is a growing experience, that is for sure. Have a great time with the puppy because when you have a crying baby you can't put it outside and leave it there! Haven't seen any puppy pics lately.

  7. Oh Kim, you're scaring me! Whenever Gesso is being fussy we just put him outside and shut the door...you're telling me that doesn't work with kids?? :)

  8. O.K. Holly, a little lesson in parenting. First child, you'll never let them out of your site even when their fussy. Second child, hold them most of the time when fussy, otherwise to the crib. Third child, first child will inform you when their fussy because you will not have noticed. So on and so forth. By the time any of them are old enough, you will put them outside to play when they are fussy or any other time you need a little peace and quiet.

So what do you think of that?
