"Needing" the dough

Making homemade bread has been on my list of things to start doing for a long time.  I bought a bread machine years ago and used it a few times, but now it's out almost everyday.  It started with the cinnamon rolls a few weeks ago.  Then I began making loaves of white and wheat bread.  I love the wheat!  Now, I am addicted.  I really "need" the dough!  It's just soooo much better than store bought.  And since it goes for a spin the the bread machine and has it's first rise there, it's very easy to dump it into a pan for the second rise and bake in the oven.  I could just use the bread machine but I love the classic loaf shape.  You really need to try it if you don't already bake your own bread.

Same recipe as the cinnamon rolls except without the filling.  I almost have it memorized now:

Homemade Bread
1 cup water
2 T. butter
1 egg
3 1/3 c. flour (mix half wheat & half white for wheat bread)
1/4 c. sugar
1 t. salt
3 T. yeast

Hey, I do have it memorized!

Mix in the bread machine on dough setting.  Remove after first rise.  Knead once or twice to shape into loaf.  Put in pan to rise again for about 1 hour.  Bake at 350 degrees for 25 minutes.  Rub butter on top.

  1. Kim, I'm just going through some of your sections at the top of the blog. Your one on Homeschooling, and your explanations are just fabulous. I may just ask you for a 'Why do you homeschool' interview one day on my blog.... I loved reading it x

  3. There's just something about the aroma of homemade bread baking...there's nothing like it. And I love it warm from the oven topped with butter and honey. I'm always looking for a new bread recipe...I'm heading to the kitchen to make yours now! Thanks for sharing, -Mary

  4. Thanks, girls! It does smell good.

    Homeschool on the Croft,
I'm glad you like the Homeschool page. Hopefully it will encourage someone to give it a try or continue on their homeschool journey. It's so brave of you to homeschool in a country where it is rare. I would be happy to do an interview someday.

  6. Oh yum! There's no replacement for homemade bread! I think you might have put a bee in my bonnet to get the bread pans out again :)

  9. I have made all my bread for probably 35 years, and in the last ten or so, I've done it pretty much the same way you do with a bread machine doing the kneading and first rising. I don't make loaves, though, but individual buns that can be used for sandwiches or as dinner rolls. Once you get used to making your own bread, as you are now, you just never want to go back to eating store bought bread.

  10. A note to let you know, your bread recipe is really terrific! I put the ingredients into my heavy-duty mixer to let it do the blending and kneading, then followed the rest of your directions. We all agreed, this recipe is a keeper!

  11. My dad hates store bought wheat, but loves mine. I've been too busy lately, but after APRIL 18th, life goes back to some semblence of normal and Dad can get his bread again. I prefer homemade all the time. I also make at least one loaf into rolls, as it seems to be quicker to my family to cut a roll, as slice the loaf. Mom says she slices the whole loaf when I bring it and then it is ready to go! Thinking sweet rolls should be on my list, too!

  12. You say your bread recipe is the same as the cinnamon? the cinnamon recipe is 3 tsp. yeast and you have 3 T (Tb. ) yeast for the bread . Is it 3 tsp or 3 tb for bread?

  13. Linda,
Hmm...You are right. But to be honest, I'm not sure which is was, I think 3 teaspoons ~ that would be one packet of yeast.
I have switched to this new recipe that only requires one rise. It's a little bit fluffier than this one too. Here's the link:
http://redfarmhouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/one-rise-bread.html It has both recipes (bread & cinnamon rolls) in one post.
    Hope you like them!

  14. Hi, my name is Donna and I am new to your blog but I love it. I made the bread recipe today. It is very similar to my go to bread recipe. I did have a question though. What size bread pan do you use or do you make this into two loaves? Thanks for letting me know. I also plan on making your oven fried chicken recipe. My friend Vicki says it is delicious. I want to try it, hopefully tomorrow. Thanks for letting me know. Visit me at my blog any time- www.merryheartcrafts.com. Enjoy your day and God bless.

  15. Donna,
If I'm remembering right, this recipe is for 1 regular size loaf pan. I've switched to making a one rise recipe that is really good too. It makes 2 loaves. I usually make half the dough into a loaf and half into cinnamon rolls. Here's the link: http://redfarmhouse.blogspot.com/2011/08/one-rise-bread.html
