Too close to home

It's never good when you wake up and one of the first words you hear is "Fire!"

view from an upstairs window
This morning that happened.  My husband woke moments after seven when he heard an explosion and felt it shake the house.  Immediatly we were all out of bed.  A huge plume of black smoke with leaping flames was directly to the north of our house.  Dark clouds of smoke quickly covered our property while the horses ran frantically.

It was about a quarter of a mile away where a tanker truck and a small car collided on an expressway.  The tanker was full and and the fuel was dispersed on the road and grass.  It turned into a grass fire. Thank heaven for excellent firefighters!  The winds are out of the North today so it could have come straight towards us.  It has taken them two hours to get the fire out.  As I write this, the helicopters are still circling outside. Amazingly, everyone survived this accident. This was too close to home!

  1. Oh I an so glad they survived and you all are OK. That explosion must have been massive.

I wonder of those who survived were badly burned? Oh that is a bad thought.
    Take care!

  2. I agree! I don't like grass fires. The neighbor two places over had a burn barrel catch their field and it quickly came to my next door neighbor's place. Thank goodness for the volunteer fire dept and their firefighter backpacks. They caught it before it took any of her buildings (and spread to our place!)

  9. That would scare me to death. My husband is a retired fire fighter of 37 years. Boy, has he got some tales to tell.

  11. We actually ended up with two fires very close today. At lunch there was a grass fire 5 properties away directly to the south. What a weird day!

  12. So glad everyone was OK. As a former EMT an accident like that could have turned out very bad. Also, glad you guys were spared and hopefully the horses settled down!

  13. Hi Kim....what a terrible thing to happen! I'm so glad no one was hurt and that the fire didn't spread towards your beautiful home. You just never expect these things to happen especially so close to home. I hope everything is cleaned up now and the smoke has quit....I feel sorry for your critters. I hope you have a nice weekend.
