Potato harvest

With temps in the high 90s for the last two weeks, we decided our potatoes were done.  "Done in" that is.  The tops had withered and died meaning they were ready to dig.

you have to dig them carefully

We got about 40 lbs I think.  Not quite as many as I thought we would harvest.  We decided we need to add peat moss next year to our clay like soil.  Maybe that will help.

Remember the planting potatoes post?  This is what happens to the seed potato.  It sprouts the new plant and then feeds it while it grows.  Then it just sits under there rotting.  The new potatoes grow on the roots of the plant.

Even though there aren't as many as we thought, they are good looking potatoes.  A lot of them were really small.  They will be good for skillet frying or making creamed potatoes.  Guess what's on the menu for dinner? Fresh from the garden is always good!

  8. Yumm! I love the little potatoes with roasts. The first time I grew potatoes was by accident. I read to start a shrub, put a small green branch in a potato. The shrub died, but the potatoes were awsome. Since then I have purposely tried to grow potatoes and they have never been as good as that time.

We enjoy those teeny ones tossed in olive oil and herbs in a foil packet on the grill.

  12. @ Jennifer....you poor thing-never had a fresh potato! You really need to experience one of the great joys of gardening. All the hard work is so worth it when you put anything fresh from the garden into your mouth. Maybe if you have a farmers market near you could indulge yourself.
