Sharpening ~ simple things
This little gem is in our mudroom. It reminds me of elementary school. Our youngest swiped it out of my in-laws garage before they moved. I'm so glad he did! Not only is it perfectly functional, it perfectly fits the farmhouse style.
This year during my drawing class, I told one of the girls there was a sharpener in the mudroom.
She couldn't find it.
And then she didn't know how to use it.
It makes you wonder...
Since when is sharpening a pencil so strenuous that we need electricity to do it?
&
Where have the simple things gone?
&
Is there anything nicer than a freshly sharpened pencil?
oh, we used to have one of those at home too! loved it! something about the smell of fresh shavings and lead. :)
ReplyDeleteI don't think there is! I just discovered your blog and really enjoy it. Sweet, pretty ... what a treat.
ReplyDeleteOh how I love the smell of freshly sharpened pencils!
ReplyDeleteI completely agree. We have one as well and we love it. Simple and perfect. :-)
ReplyDeleteHi Kim, I totally agree...everything seems to be electric. We lived in Key Largo when hurricane Andrew hit and were without power for six weeks. I'm sure some people wished they had a manuel sharpener. Simple is better so many times.
ReplyDeleteIt is a little scary sometimes to think how far our society have gotten from being able to function without technology. We would be in big trouble if we suddenly had only the bare essentials and had to use common sense to get along.
ReplyDeleteI can't write with a dull pencil, gotta love a sharp pencil. Enjoy your blogs so much. Hugs, Bobbi Jo
ReplyDeleteWe have one in our farmhouse too! On another note.....we have had your wonderful skillet green beans 3x's this week alone! A family favorite now! Tonight we had them with little new potatoes and added onions......sooooo good!
ReplyDeleteThanks for sharing!
As a teacher I always had a sharpener on my desk. My team teacher had the electric one. I loved it when the electricity went out and the little darlings would stand for a second with the pencil in the sharpener, before looking around to see if anyone had noticed, then slinking over to mine. Ha! The hand ones get pencils sharper.
ReplyDeletethey're still the best! -t
ReplyDeleteThere's a good,old-fashioned sharpener in my in-law's laundry room...I've been longing for it for years! I just may ask if it's up for grabs...especially when we've already gone through 2 electric sharpeners. I little elbow grease is all that's needed with yours. -Mary
ReplyDeleteWouldn't it be nice if they would put them back in the classrooms and had kids use real pencils? Debi
ReplyDeleteYeah, I have kids that do all math in pen...PEN! I said, NOT PENCIL?? Naw...I bought a sharpener online for preschool, because I couldn't find one in a store that would do the fat, starter pencils. We had preschool in the church and no other sharpener could be found in the whole church.
ReplyDeleteEveryone else, go online and order your own. The truth is no one is going to be done with theirs until they are done, and that's a LOOOONNGG time to wait. You'll smile everytime you use it!!
Neat post. Even the brand name is familiar on the sharpener. I wish everyone still used one. The batteries in our sharpener at work ran out over a year ago and no one has or will replace them. We just use pens or computers.
ReplyDeleteok I am liking your pencil sharpener!
ReplyDeleteWe had one of those in our house growing up (and of course in school) and I wish we had one now! The kids go through SO MANY pencils and those cheepy plastic sharpeners don't work worth squat. I refuse to buy an electric one!
ReplyDeleteKim we have one of those sitting on our desk here on the farm...works great!
