Swimming hole

Before you start thinking we are hicks, let me give you some background to the new activity at the Red Farmhouse:

It's HOT ~ like over 100 degrees for weeks on end.
I'm not exaggerating!

It's DRY ~ it hasn't rained in forever.
Ok, that's an exaggeration but it seems like forever.
For sure, it hasn't rained all July.
(see how brown the grass is?)

Ok, are you ready for our swimming hole?

Yes, that's a cattle trough. This city girl never thought she would let her kids swim in a water hole.

Extreme heat calls for extreme measures though.

\

A little algae on the bottom but other than that it's
 fresh, cold, well water.
Nothing wrong with that, right?  Right?

It looks pretty good actually.

I'm thinking about getting in myself.

However some are looking on thinking we are out of our minds!

  1. You are right :) Nothing wrong with that! If we had a trough that big, I think I'd be doing the same thing!

  3. When I was a little kid in Billings, MT, my dad worked at a place that made troughs out of fiberglass, and brought one home for my brother and me to swim in during our scorching summer heat. It was the best pool ever!!

  8. I would so be getting in there with the kids! We do not have a watering hole, so we went to Wally World and bought a big blue Hillbilly pool! Having a ball with it! I used the grandbaby as a reason to buy it!

  9. I was hoping to see a floating raft out there! My girls took the horses to the pond. It's pretty cool until you get a slug attached to your skin. ooooh! Debi

  10. Love it! We used to have a big Rubbermaid water tub for animals that my kids used for a swimming pool when they were younger. Dear Hubby and I would even sit in it sometimes. The water would come up to our necks when we sat in it. Now it sits at the bottom of my little waterfalls and is a goldfish pond ~ which I call the black lagoon. Thanks for conjuring up a good memory.

  12. Cool is cool... no matter what it looks like! At least your swimmin' hole is large enough for several to enjoy at one time - we only have small water tanks - one person at a time! I wonder if the cows mutter about it under their breath?! Just imagine what they might say!!

  13. We, too, live on a farm in Illinois and when our girls were little they had the same pool. The best idea yet. So enjoy your blog.

  14. I love your water trough! So perfect. I'll have to see if I can find one that size around here. The ducks would love it!

  15. water is water....when you have that kind of heat it doesn't matter where it is...

  16. I love it! We had used a old bear hauling tub for our pool until our dear SIL gave us her old swimming pool! But hey it worked just fine for us, that's simplicity!

  17. A fun way to try to stay cool!

  18. Enjoyed looked through your blog! I grew up with a watertank as my sibling and I's only swimming hole too, and it was wonderful on hot summer days!

  19. my dad turned one into a pool when we were kids. It was the BEST pool ever as a kid!! We would all get in and start going around and around and create a whirlpool (like a water tornado) and then body surf (well at least the best you could possible body surf in a round pool).

  20. My dad turned one into a swimming pool when we were kids and it was the best pool ever (in the eyes of a child :). We would all pile in and go around and around until it started creating a whirlpool (think tornado only in the water)and then "body surf" (well the best one could body surf in a round pool that is). It was the best way to get thru those hot Oklahoma days!
