Jared has a little lamb

Well, it's not little but he sure is cute!  We went to pick him out from the 4-H club lambs last night.  Jared will raise him, train him and then show him in the spring.  He's 3 month old black faced crossbreed wether.

We were told to look for a straight back and pegged legs.  I think he looks pretty good but what do I know?   We don't know anything about sheep.  No matter what, this will be a good first experience with showing and will also be a good test to see if sheep are an animal that our family enjoys.  Wayne has been talking about starting a small flock.

Right now J is trying to get him to come to him for food or petting.  He's going to have to spend lots of time out there!

I think he is wondering, "What kind of sheep are those?" and "Where is my momma?"

To entice him, J placed food on top of the spool

and is waiting patiently (or impatiently)
while he tries to think of a cartoon character name that fits his lamb.

  1. I think he is darling. I can't wait to hear what Jared decides to name him. It will be fun to see his adventures! I love watching the 4-H kids with their animals at the fair. I can stay in that arena for hours!

  9. Love that last pic of Jared! How 'bout Tazmanian Devil for a name, call him Taz for short. Ya, run that by Jared...:-)

  10. Taz is cute.
So far the considerations have been...
Pegleg Pete (my idea that no one went for)
Strider (Lord of the Rings character, boy's idea, of course)
and the one that is coming out on top so far ~ Riblet (he is a market lamb after all).

  11. What a cute lamb! We will be getting sheep soon. It makes sense because a it takes two years to grow out cattle. Pigs and sheep are so much quicker. I'm anxious to see what hubby will bring home. My daughter will get a sow or two and will have piglets. We haven't birthed our own, we usually buy them from other farmers. She wanted it to be her business.

  20. I see this is an old post, but I am curious how the 4H sheep project went?! We bought goats about 3 months ago with the intent for our 4th grade son to show, but we are finding that it is very time and money consuming!! Did you all stick with the 4H showing....or end up just raising and selling sheep without the show process?

    1. Hi Sarah. Yes, this was a long time ago! This project was short lived. Through it we found that we loved raising sheep but wanted to do it our own way, the way we felt it should be done. We think 4H is a great club but it wasn't for us. In the end, we felt our boys would learn more about true shepherding, by living life as shepherds. and not raising sheep for the show ring. It's a personal decision that your family will have to make. We don't regret the direction we took at all!
