Little brown eggs

For the last week I have been finding little brown eggs in the nest boxes (like the one perched on top of this handful).  That can only mean one thing ~ the pullets are laying!  Only one or two a day right now but I have high hopes that they will all get into the swing of things over the next few weeks.  As Production Reds, they are expected to lay one a day.

They are pretty birds.  Honestly I thought they would be ugly.  I'm happy to say I was wrong.

As it turns out all nine were not pullets.  We have a rooster in the coop.  He's a handsome boy and can stay as long as he minds his manners.  Although I had no intention of  getting a rooster and his crow is louder than the previous ones, he adds pleasant farmyard sounds in the mornings.  Let's hope he stays nice.

  1. We ended up with an extra rooster this Spring, too. He's nicer than the one we have, so the older might be dinner in the Fall. :)

  2. We seem to end up with a rooster every time we get chicks! I had a Rhode Island Red rooster that started getting aggressive so I chased him down, grabbed him up, looked him in the eye and told him who the boss was. Believe it or not, he behaved after that! I think it was the shock-factor that I chased him instead of the other way around, hahahaha!

  3. We have learned to keep roosters with our flock at all times. The hens are calmer and tend to lay more consistently. The roosters will also sound the alarm when there is a predator. Sometimes, they will even try to fight off a predator- mixed results on that one!

  4. I love seeing the chicken posts. I'm still waiting for mine, but trying to speak nicely to hubby.
In fact, I may go and try my charm one more time right now!

  5. Yay, more eggs. I love it when pullets start laying. Your rooster is a handsome fella. We ended up with a rooster in our shipment of 25 pullets, also. Ours is a barred rock and he too is a keeper.

  8. I'm very jealous of all your fresh eggs. We used to have a mean Rooster we named Noodles, because everytime he flopped one of us kids we would ask our grandparents if we could make chicken and noodles out of him. :) Here's hoping yours stays nice.

  9. Beautiful chickens and the rooster is a handsome fella. Good luck with his manners. We had a mean rooster when I was a kid. One day my little brother ran to the garage with the rooster on his tail. Next they went running by the rooster was running from my broom swatting brother. HA.

  10. Aaawww....you have pretty girls! It is so funny when they first start laying, I find little eggs in some weird places! It took mine a while to get it all figured out.

Our rooster (Floyd) is going on
5yrs old and we love him! He has always been such a nice guy, but he does watch after his girls!

  11. Oh, I am so wishing we had chickens! Maybe before next year we'll have time to build a coop - now that we don't live in a community with rules against fowl, I'd even entertain the idea of having a rooster (as you said, if he behaves!)

  12. I started getting pullet eggs a few weeks ago. I actually like them even better than the larger ones. He is a handsome guy isn't he?

  13. Hi Kim!
Looks like you'll soon have more eggs than you can shake a stick at! I agree...they're good looking chickens especially the rooster. Our Romeo is the sweetest rooster and so good with the hens. He's a gentleman! We also have a Cochin rooster...he's a pretty boy and very nice too but I keep the Cochin's separate that way there's no fighting. We have 3 of our hatched pullets in there with the Cochin's but they'll be going in with the others soon. I think. Hope your day is a good one.

  15. I thought all of our 7 were pullets until this morning when I heard a familiar crowing in my back yard. One of our black "hens" who was crowing up a storm. Funny but he never seemed very dominant. We are taking the same approach as you with him though. I hope he doesn't both the neighbors....

  17. Let me know when you are selling eggs again and I'll be out to buy some. The rooster is really pretty, isn't he? I hope he acts nicer than the last rooster.

  18. It's such fun to discover those first eggs! And I was more than overjoyed the morning I discovered one egg for every hen...no roosters to be found. I do agree though...the crowing does add a nice old-fashioned farmyard sound.
