Scout

He has been with our family for a long time.
He was a stray brought home from cub scout camp.
He knew how to sit, lay down, and loved petting.
He instantly became part of the family.

He never wet on the floor (except when we put up the Christmas tree that first year and he though we were bringing the outdoors in so he would have to go out! haha)
He didn't bark.
He never jumped on people.
He became instant friend to our three young boys.

When we moved to the farm, he became protector of all the animals.
He checks on them everyday morning and night.
He loves the chickens.

He's been a faithful companion to all of us.
But he's old and gray.
He's not eating.
He has cancer.
We are terribly sad about the thought of losing him.

  5. I send my love to the Little Red Farm House. Recently my family lost our darling Akita to glaucoma right after she had corrective surgery. I am sorry to hear about Scout's health. Nothing hurts more than knowing your companion is ill in a way that you can't fix. Please give him a belly rub or five for me, as I'll be keeping him and your family in my thoughts.

  6. Oh Kim....my heart goes out to you all....we have been down this road and it is so heartbreaking. You have given Scout a wonderful life and he knows that. You will know when it is time to let him go, we knew and as hard as it was to let our boy go, it was our last gift to him.....for we did not want him to suffer. You all will carry Scout in your hearts and memories forever. We talk about our Dudley often and he left us over 10yrs ago. It is so hard to lose them, but life would be sad and dull without them. I like to think that Dudley is playing and waiting for us at Rainbow Bridge, until we are all together again.
    Hugs to you all!

  14. What a sweet dog. How lucky to have had you in his life. It's hard to see our fuzzy friends suffer. It's hard to make those decisions to ease their pain. We've all been there and feel the sadness, and the pain, and remember our sweet pets that have gone before us. Hugs to you.

  17. Having to say goodbye, and having to decide when to say goodbye to a furry family member is such a heartbreaking thing to do! We have had to say goodbye to three of our goldens in the past three years, they leave pawprints on your heart forever. I still miss them, but smile at the memories, they will always be a part of family. Hugs and prayers to you all.

  18. "Niece" said it best. I'm sorry Scout's light is fading. I too lost my dear girl 2 years ago. But as bad as it still hurts, I wouldn't trade one second of time I enjoyed with her. God's Blessings to you, your family and beautiful Scout.

  20. I'm sorry about Scout. I can not imagine life without our Shaqie Shoes. Scout brought love & joy to you & your family. He could not have done that if you had not brought him home in his time of need. May God lift your spirits & bring you peace.

  21. My heart sank when I read a bit...I knew this is where it was leading. But we all know dogs live 10-15 years. Such love and devotion and can you IMAGINE life without them? Hugs sent your way...

  22. Bless your heart. I am so sad for you. There is nothing the love of and for a Golden Retriever. Our first one lived to be 14 1/2. I said for the last few years of her life that there would be no more dogs for a long time. I wanted a break. i wanted to be able to travel without worrying about finding someone to watch the dog. I lasted 4 months. I just couldn't stand the empty space she left behind. I'm thinking of you and hope you find some comfort in your love and memories although even as I type that I'm crying for you. Hugs, Jen

  23. I know how you feel we lost our Golden to cancer last year and it still hurts. In fact when I saw the picture of your boys and Scout at first I thought is was my kids and Chester as we have a picture in almost the same pose. Just remember he is not hurting anymore

  24. So many kind thoughts from all of you. How can I say thanks?
Scout is comfortable but weary. He is eating a little and none of it dog food. We are letting him enjoy his last days with extra love and attention until he just can't go on. We owe him that. He's such a good dog.

  25. Our Ernie, a border collie, died Saturday in the night. He was starting to have issues and we were deciding what to do. Still trying to fill the water and when I don't see him, I go to the door to let him in.... He had us trained quite well!!

  28. I'm so sorry to hear about Scout's illness and decline. This is the most awful part of having pets, but it's worth it. The joy they bring to your family and the love and care they receive from you- really, it's worth it. I'm so sorry. Good boy, Scout.
