Knitting lesson
The thought of spinning yarn from our own fleeces from our own sheep has caused me to take on one more new thing ~ knitting.
I've wanted to learn to knit for years! I've just never forced myself to do it although I have been doing every other form of needlework for at least 25 years. Ok, longer than that really. My great grandmother put a sewing needle in my hand at a very young age. I think that experience will make knitting a little easier to pick up. I hope!
I'm working on my first project as well...a wool shawl. I hope to get it finished in time to keep warm with this winter. Sounds like you'll have the perfect hobby for a frosty night by the fireplace...let us see how it turns out! -Mary
ReplyDeleteI want to encourage you to not get discouraged. I'm sure you will pick it up easy. I still struggle with reading a pattern but I get by. Before you know it you will be like me with several unfinished projects because a new and inspiring one comes along. Now i have always wanted to try spinning, so keep posting pictures. Hugs!!
ReplyDeleteI just finished my first project last night made of yarn that was grown by my alpacas and let me tell you it was such a neat feeling to put the headband on my head knowing I had a hand in caring for the animals that grew it and that it was made with my hands having been started on this knitting path by my grandmother. That particular headband was sold before it was on the needles and I've got two more to finish up the order but once I am finished with the orders I'll have had plenty of time to have decided what I'll be making for myself with a yard from a very special alpaca. Cannot wait! Keep it up it's fun and even more special when it comes from your own farm!
ReplyDeleteI took up knitting when my kids were mostly grown up and we had fleeces piling up. I watched LOTS of youtube videos, bought some books and occasionally asked some friends for their approval nod. It actually just takes a lot of practice and patience. Once you knit your first pair of socks you will be hooked.

ReplyDeleteMy mom had me sewing at an early age, and I think I started knitting my first sweater when I was around 11. I don't recall finishing it, though. I believe I grew so much that I decided not to finish a sweater I'd never be able to wear! But... I'm not great a knitting - I just know the basics.
ReplyDeleteCasually asking around and going to a few church ladies crafty things helped to find the lady to help. She never makes you feel dumb, doesn't take it out of your hands to do it for you, unless you are crying and really desperate!! She is patient and encouraging and willing to tell you 10 times, if you need it. I also have the idiot's guide which helps and the youtube tutorials. Keep challenging yourself...but DON"T use alpaca, because when you do, you'll find you need some of them around the farm, too!
