My chickens love it when...

I make jam.

You see, they always get the strawberry tops.
It's their favorite!  {That and spagetti.  Yes, they love spagetti.}

I love how the rooster watchs over his hens making sure they are safe while they eat their treats.

Strawberry tops make chickens happy.
Happy chickens lay lots of eggs.
I have 12 dozen eggs in the fridge right now!
Guess my girls are happy.

  1. I can't wait until our girls start laying! And the more I read about people who have a rooster too, the more I wonder if we shouldn't add one :)

  2. I didn't know chickens like strawberry tops. I will have to see if our rabbits like them. Looking forward to strawberry season here. We ran out of our jam and our oldest is anxiously awaiting new jam.

  3. Goats like them too and happy goats produce lots of milk! We are quite a ways from strawberry season here, but really looking forward to it!

  7. Told my mom we'd pick berries on Wednesday. Hoping we have good weather. She didn't need to make Jam, but I do! And some shortcake for supper and some fresh ones for smoothies! Been getting them from the store, but they aren't local and someone brought locals on Friday...WOW!! Now that's a strawberry!!
I'd send my tops to your chickens, but they probably wouldn't be too yummy by the time they got there!

  9. Those are our chickens' favorites as well! Wonder if the spaghetti reminds them of worms?

  10. I haven't given my chickens spaghetti yet but I have seen them demolish strawberry tops and watermelon rinds. Do you give them just the noodles? We have 5 hens that are a year old so we get 3-5 eggs per day (my easter egg hen is the most reliable one with one per day) and we have 3 teens that will be ready to lay in a couple of months. I can't imagine having 12 dozen in the fridge (we are big egg eaters in this house). How many hens do you have? Yummo on the jam!

  11. Happy chickens indeed! Homemade jam is a favorite here at our house. We use it on baked oatmeal, ice cream, pancake/waffles, toast, pb&j (of course!). My husband says "You can't ever have enough jam!" Every year we run out..so I think he's pretty accurate. I'm trying currant jelly for the first time this season. Some currants were gifted to us!

  12. I bet the chickens are not the only happy ones when you make strawberry jam. I know for a fact that it is super delicious.

  13. Well, I don't know if spagetti reminds the chickens of worms but it reminds ME of worms when they are eating them. Yes, Nolita, we only give them the noodles plain. And we have 22 hens right now (a few too many).

I agree, Gaertegand, you can't ever have enough jam. And yes, Alice, you are right, Jonah has devoured almost a whole jar by himself since I made it!

  14. Mine like eating rice! And cheese, and grubs, and mice - pretty much everything.

  15. Between the goats (who loved the strawberry leaves) and the chickens who loved the berries, growing up we only had a strawberry patch for about four or five summers ;)

  16. My girls love the tops, too! Unfortunately our strawberry season has already ended in SC, except for the plants we have just around the house. I froze a few bags of chopped berries to make more batches of jam--so the girls enjoyed LOTS of tops a few weeks ago :o)

So what do you think of that?
