Breeches and Tall Boots

This week was a new adventure in my horse journey!

Long time followers may know my road on horses has been a bumpy one.  Excitement and anticipation quickly turned to fear and trembling when we brought horses home to our new farm four years ago.  Hours of western groundwork and riding lessons, showmanship, and even a college equestrian class have helped me progress along the way.  Yet, I still had not found my "horse fit".  There were just so many types of riding, types of horses, classes and events.  I knew I loved horses.  I just didn't know what to do with them.

Six months ago, our middle son made the switch to English and jumping.  I quietly watched him learn a new way of riding.  While attending an eventing competition, I watched dressage... and wondered.  Standing there at the edge of the arena, a new dream emerged in my heart ~ one that included breeches and tall boots.  My husband whispered to me, "I can see you doing this." {smile} After 25 years of marriage, he knows me too well!

A few months of thinking pondering getting up my courage and I asked my son's coach what she thought about me taking lessons. She was enthusiastic but I knew there was little chance of this happening.  For one thing, I had no horse to do this on.  "My horse", D, is being ridden by my son and she is too spirited for me anyway.  Amazing how things work out.  Some friends offered their very nice English horse for me to ride this winter in their heated barn.

This week I had my first ride in breeches and tall boots.
I think I've found my fit.
And so, I begin my new adventure

  6. That's wonderful, Kim! After thinking all along growing up I was going to be an eventer, I soon learned I didn't really have the nerve! LOL But, the more I got into dressage, the more I realized that it was my fit, too. I even wound up being a working student on a beautiful dressage farm! Although I haven't had the chance to ride in years, I do miss it, and will one day go back to it. This post made me smile, I'm so excited for you! Have fun!

    1. Eventing is what our middle son is training for. He just loves jumping! I want to keep my horses feet firmly on the ground. After two lessons, I'm convinced this is the horse fit I have been looking for. Thanks for the encouragement. Hope you get back to dressage someday!

  8. My own horse adventure began with eventing, but quickly shifted to dressage, and I never looked back. I hope you find it to be a lifelong passion, too.

  9. I just found your blog but look forward to reading more! I just wanted to say that as a life long horse lover, I LOVED the horses, but riding not so much, until the fateful day I first plunked down into an English saddle. Then I realized this was the riding I was meant to do! I took lessons with a H/J trainer and it changed my life! I'm currently horse-less, but look back with great fondness over the 20+ years God allowed me to share my life with these beautiful animals!
