Guard Llama

We've been talking about getting a guard llama
for the last year.  What we believe to be a bobcat has taken three of our lambs in that time and yesterday
we woke to find one of our ewes dead.

Even with hundreds of houses nearby,
we have a predator problem.

When you raise sheep, you expect to lose a few lambs
but not a 100 pound ewe.
It's one BIG predator!
We have paw prints to prove it.
Nearly 3 inches square.

So today,
we brought home another black and white spotted animal.
a guard llama named
Rikasha ("Ricochet")

He came from Mariko Llamas in Texas
and was formerly shown in 4-H
so he's mannerly and walks nicely on a halter.

Almost immediately the sheep were following him.
From the moment he stepped out the of the trailer,
he has been patrolling. It will take a few days for him to adjust to life at the Little Red Farmhouse.

Hopefully, our new Sergeant-at-Arms
will keep the predator at bay.

Nothing like a handsome guy on duty.
Happy Memorial Day!

    1. Yikes! We think it was a bobcat since some have been nearby but it would be really big. We are going to talk to the wildlife dept tomorrow.
Yes, we are getting lots of rain and we needed it badly. Glad you are too!

    1. Usually llamas and alpacas stand still once they are caught and the shearer does a great job.

  5. Oh Kim, I can only imagine how hard the losses must be, having never suffered a predator attack. I hope the llama is able to keep the sheep safe.

    1. I can't believe you have never had issues but I'm so glad! We thought locking the lambs up at night after weaning and until they got older would work but we never thought we needed to protect the ewes too. Hope Rikasha helps.

    1. It's like they knew he would be the leader. Amazing. This morning they let us know they did not appreciate being locked up with him all night though! They'll adjust. ;)

  9. It's so awful to see animal losses. Our kids show llamas at the county fair...their 4-H advisor has a llama farm nearby. We just had a lesson on how terrific guard llamas are...sounds like it was a great choice for your farm.
